Setting up Parental
Controls in Internet Explorer
Browser Controls
To protect children from the dangerous side of the Internet (such as
pornography), Internet Explorer offers parental controls.
Internet Explorer 5.5
This Microsoft browser uses RSACi - Recreational Software Advisory
Council as its default rating system.
To enable this system,
- Open your browser
- Find the menu on the top
- Click Tools / Internet Options
- Select the content tab
- Click Enable
- Select allowed ratings ( or leave it at default for the safest
ratings)
- Click OK
- Type in password
Now that the system is enabled, you can set up advanced options:
- Follow the above steps 1-4
- Click settings
- Enter your password
To change the rating levels (0 is the safest):
- Click on one of the words (Language, Nudity, Sex, Violence)
- Move the cursor from one level to another
- Click OK
To allow/restrict access to certain sites: (beware, sites may
link to inappropriate material)
- Select the Approved Sites tab
- Enter a URL (web address, such http://www.searchengines.com/)
- Select Always or Never
- Click OK
To change password, rating system or viewing options:
- Select the General tab
- Choose the appropriate action
- Click OK when you're done
You can choose another rating system, SafeSurf, to complement the
already existing one. You will need to download a file found here:
http://www.safesurf.com/iesetup/
Negatives of Internet Explorer's browser controls:
Not all sites, even child-related, are registered with the rating
systems. Therefore, controls may:
- Restrict sites with appropriate content, if they don't have a rating
- Restrict searches, even on kids' engines
- Decrease the "research tool" value of the web
- Will not restrict Instant Messaging
