Browser Controls
To protect children from the dangerous side of the Internet (such as
pornography), Netscape offers some parental controls.
Netscape Navigator 4.7
Just as Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator uses RSACi -
Recreational Software Advisory Council and SafeSurf to rate content.
To enable this system:
- Open your browser
- Find the menu on the top
- Click Help / NetWatch - here you can find more info
- Click on the "NetWatch Set up Process"
- Click New User
- Click Grant (Netscape wants to be rated as Medium Risk)
- Leave all default settings for the safest ratings
- Type in password
- Click Save Changes
Now that the system is enabled, you can set up advanced options:
- Follow the above steps 1-4
- Type in password on the right
- Enter your password
To change the rating levels (0 is the safest):
- Select the level allowed from drop-down menu (for any or all
words)
- Scroll down
- Click Save Changes
To change rating system:
- Select / Deselect RSACi or SafeSurf ratings
- Scroll down
- Click Save Changes
Negatives of Netscape's browser controls:
Not all sites, even child-related, are registered with the rating
systems. Therefore, controls may:
- Restrict sites with appropriate content, if they don't have a rating
- Restrict searches, even on kids' engines
- Decrease the "research tool" value of the web
- Will not restrict Instant Messaging.
